  • Filtering and Bandwidth ..... what to do?
    1. The filtering has been tightened down on Google so that students can't access explicit content on the web.  We have to re teach the way we have students access Google to use the safe search features.  The Google search box built into Safari will no longer function (Firefox's will after you set your Google preferences to use safe search).  Ron will be teaching the TRT's how to make sure they have the correct "SafeSearch" tool on all the WSD web sites instead of the standard Google Search.
    2. In a nut shell.... if you use Google you must use the Safe Search and the easiest is to use one like the one built into this page... or use the advanced search feature and click on Safe Search or Strict filtering option.
    3. Bandwidth.... is expensive... and we are spending a lot of money that was not figured into our original budget because of our use.
    4. TRT's will try to find out if people are using services (other than United Streaming) that stream content with the intent of identifying the content that supports our district/state curriculum and student learning.
    5. TRT's will help people to understand that streaming radio and other sources that stream data are a very expensive way to do business, but if it is related to curriculum then we need to find out if the same resource can be downloaded and used locally, purchased, etc.
    6. TRT's were made away that Automatic OS X updates ARE NOT A GOOD IDEA.  They are convenient, yes, but they eat a lot of bandwidth at the district level.  They were encouraged to work with their TRA to turn these off and learn how to do the updates via Remote Desktop.
    7. Another issue is supervision of students.  They are very good at finding multimedia content on the web and in an unsupervised lab this will be abused and will cost the WSD money.  Supervision is the best way to make sure students are not viewing/downloading content not related to student learning.
    8. United Streaming in the fall will be on a local server so this will not impact district bandwidth or cost, but K-5 will still only be able to have a couple streams active at one time, 6-12 will be able to stream more because of their fiber connection.  So we will do our best to educate the staff that even with this local server they will want to stream the resource to PREVIEW/EVALUATE only then they should DOWNLOAD the resource to their computer or an in the building server.
  • Webmaster stipend proposal
    1. What I submitted to the negotiating team
  • Training's and Meetings for Next Year
    • I have restructured the training's for next year to accommodate more people and to better meet the needs of the buildings within the WSD.
    • We will be better able to have focused intent on issues related to each level and to individual buildings with this model.
    • Librarians will be invited to any TRT training that has an agenda item that they could benefit from hearing/learning.
    • TRT's will be able to "Bring a Buddy" to one or more of the three training's that are broken out by grade level. This will help us build technology leadership capacity within each building.  I will do my best to iron out details on hardware needs for these people before these meetings.

    • Here is the schedule so far for 2005 - 2006:
      • K-12 TRT's - 11/17, 2/23 (20 people)
      • Articulation Meetings - 3:30 - 5:00 at Westside HS - 9/22, 11/8, 1/24, 3/23, 5/18.  Please Make these a priority... it is an expectation in your TRT job description that you attend articulation meetings.  If you cannot attend contact Ron prior to the meeting.

      • K-5 TRT's - 9/27, 1/10, 4/11 (14 people)

      • 6-8 TRT's - 9/28, 1/11, 4/12 (12 people)

      • 9-12 TRT's - 9/29, 1/12, 4/13 (10 people)

      • Librarians - 10/12, 2/16 (12 people)
  • Pilot, What do you do with results?
    • Please collect all printed results from your staff
    • If you don't get one from everyone then go to the PILOT site and print a completion report and find out who still needs to do the survey and communicate this to your building principal and they in-turn can inform the staff that they need to complete this and get the results to the TRT.
    • Please also print a detailed building report of the survey that your staff took this spring and give this to your building principal(s) so they can better plan technology needs in 2005 - 2006.
  • Next years Building Plans.
    • Ron spoke of his work with a couple principals on their 2005-2006 CIPP building plan for technology.
    • TRT's just need to be aware and supportive of the process.
    • Ron's idea is to bring a focus to these plans and provide support to the buildings with his understanding of instructional technology and our WSD resources.
    • The concept is to have each teacher develop one or two goals in technology for themselves and their students.  They choose these goals based on their PILOT survey results and the K-12 student tech standards that are in the family guides.
    • Then using WODS, LIDS, and TRT's the plans can be supported and we can have a shared vision for our certificated staff to work toward in the area of instructional technology.
    • This could be part of the building plans or not, but Ron just wanted to make the TRT's aware that he is doing his best to help the Principals and technology committees at each building with this process.
    • Here are the documents that this idea revolves around:
  • WOD Updates
    • Summer Training Opportunities
      • There is money for summer training.
      • All current protocol for WOD's still exist.
      • Staff needs to fill out the online request form.
      • If they know they will be meeting and with whom have them do this before the school year ends.  If not the timeline might be a week for me to respond with approval, because I don't "work" in the summer.
      • I will check weekly as best I can for requests.  They will have to find their own facilitator for summer workshops.
    • Current Data
    • Before Fall Ron will make the following changes to the forms:
      • Templates or even Template Forms....
      • Put URL at bottom
  • Electronic Registration for August institute classes.
    • Please inform your staff that it is open and they should use the following site for a starting point in the process.  http://prodev.wsd.wednet.edu/topics/eschools/eschooldirections.htm
    • TRT's will try it out to make sure they can support questions with the system.
    • They should be comfortable with this site because they will also be filling out their evaluations within their account after the class has been completed.
