Week of September 14 - 18

Tuesday afternoon

Hello parents!

We're off to a great start in 7th grade core. The first few weeks we learned about school and classroom expectations, set up binders, and found out about regular core assignments.

Yesterday, Monday, we worked on a basic map of the world and labeled seven continents and oceans. These were due today.
We're off and running with our new Springboard curriculum.

We have two regular assignments in core - students will read one Independent Reading novel per quarter and complete a project that will reflect their understanding of the book. Students are encouraged to read most days of the week for at least 20 minutes

Students are also drafting choice writing every week. On Fridays, three draft pages are due, along with a reflection sheet.
We will have a quiz on the seven continents and four oceans on Friday.
We're starting a review of geography terms on Wed. and will have a quiz on them next week sometime.

Thanks for checking this blog! Please come back soon!

Hi class! I'm writing this from my Springboard training. We're learning all kinds of good teaching strategies to help you read better!

I hope you are doing well with the subs. If you have questions, remember to READ the handout and list of assignments and due dates that I gave you before I left.

Let me know you class is going! I miss you guys - I'll see you next Monday!

Tuesday 5/19

Hello everyone!
Today we turned in our writing workshop published piece and draft pages from the last two weeks.
We went to the library, and we watched a video in the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire.

We took a short Stargirl quiz and will begin discussion groups tomorrow.

Today I went through everything we will be doing until the end of the year. Students have handouts for the social studies Medieval Europe project we're going to be doing and will have a handout of activities for Stargirl tomorrow.

Tomorrow will be the re-take for the Rome government quiz
Good luck!

Tuesday 5/12

Lots going on in core.
Yesterday we started a story map for Stargirl, chapters 1-8. This is due on Friday at the beginning of class.

Monday we self assessed our social studies CBA's. Mrs. Cox will have them all graded early next week.
Today and tomorrow we're drawing a diagram that illustrates the four branches of government in ancient Rome. This is due Thursday. We'll work on it tomorrow in class as well.

We had our library check out day and worked on writing workshop.

We're having a test on ancient Rome government Friday. We reviewed a little today and will review again tomorrow.
Good luck!

Friday 5/8

Today we took a quiz on Rome Lesson 2  - The Rise of the Roman Empire. Cornell Notes were due also.
I  read ch. 6 and  7 in Stargirl, and the class read ch. 8 silently.

We continued with writing workshop. If you chose to continue reading instead of writing, be sure to write for 40 minutes this weekend. I'll check daily writing logs Monday.

Have a great weekend! See you Monday.

Wed. 5/6

Today we finished our culminating social studies classroom based research project. Yea! Most students worked very hard on this project and did a good job. I'll have final grades for this assignment by the middle of next week.

We're starting Stargirl this morning. Students will be assigned a book that they can take home if necessary, but there should be enough class time to do the required reading.

In social studies we're continuing with Rome. Tomorrow we'll do Cornell Notes on lesson 2  - The Rise of the Roman Republic and take a quiz on that lesson Friday.

In language arts, we're back to writing workshop, with a published piece of writing due every two weeks. So, there shouldn't be much homework. I'm sure that doesn't break anyone's heart!

If you check this blog, the secret work is Bellevue. PLEASE don't tell everyone - the point of the secret word that can be exchanged for candy is to get kids and parents to read it! :)

Be good for the sub and work hard. You'll feel good about yourself!

Thursday 4/30

The hard part is over! We've finished our social studies CBA research and are ready to start planning and drafting our research paper tomorrow and next week. From this point on, our CBA will be treated like a writing assessment. Students will receive one grade for the research part of the project and one grade for the writing.

Please try hard to be here all next week. CBA make ups can only be completed in my room during guided study.

We read a science fiction piece in core yesterday, "Lose Now Pay Later,  and worked with it today. Tomorrow we're reading another selection from our anthologies - "All Summer in a Day."  These are not homework assignments, so students should use class time wisely. That's sometimes hard to do when kids are hit with hard cases of Spring Fever!

We're starting Writing Workshop next week, so parents will be seeing some writing homework at times. We're also beginning the novel Stargirl, so if you want to purchase you own copy, now's the time to do it.

If I'm not on tomorrow, have a great Apple Blossom weekend! BE SAFE!

Wednesday 4/29

Good morning!
Yesterday we had a sub and the class read Lose Now Pay Later and write level 1,2,3 questions. We'll have a Socratic Seminar about the science fiction story today for those students who completed their questions.

We also worked on our social studies CBA, filling out the gathering grid, and taking more notes. We'll finish up in the lab Thursday. Gathering grids are due Thursday and your notes are due at the end of the period that day as well.

Friday, we'll continue our study of Rome and begin the outline in preparation to write the CBA next week.

Next week we'll start reading Stargirl.
The new super secret word is hullygully.

Sunday 4/26

I almost forgot about the "super secret word."
It's... fever ...
Tell me the secret word tomorrow to earn Canadian candy!

We'll be researching all week - two periods most days - for our social studies CBA.  We'll write the paper the week after next.
See you tomorrow!

Thursday 4/23

Today in class we're reading Revolt of the Evil Fairies. It's a story of racial injustice during the early 1900s. The discussion questions are due tomorrow.

We're also beginning to plan our CBA and continuing research. We have two more periods of computer lab research time, so hopefully students are getting all of the information they need.

WASL is over and Apple Blossom is here. Life is good!

Wednesday and Thursday April 15 & 16

We've completed the first day of reading WASL. Students did an amazing job. Reading again tomorrow.
We researched our CBA question both days in the library.
Students need a folder to keep their research notes in. I purchased some and will sell them to kids, at cost - 50 cents each.

On Thursday our 3rd persuasive paper was due.
Tomorrow, Friday, I'll have new fourth quarter grades for students. The CBA will be a big part of your fourth quarter grade, so be sure to do your best work every day!
