Miss Guerrero's 5th Grade Classroom

October 2, 2009

We had a busy day today! In the morning we had an assembly to review expectations for our Star Student assembly. During science, we used the mimio to draw our terrarium environments and labeled each part, including the MOLD! Mr. Sheppard visited us during math and watched us multiply two-digit numbers using the partial products method. Ms. Guerero said we did an awesome job labeling our sketches and helping each other and our partners. Everyone showed a "thumbs up" to show that we understood this method.S7302044.JPG

Today we got to go on our first field trip called Beauty of Bronze. We got to walk around downtown Wenatchee and look at some of the statues that we have in our town. Kevin Pattelle is a sculptor who helped us make our own bronze statues. Some of his statues are on display here in our town. He showed us a video of when he was interviewed by a television station about a statue he made to honor JP Patches the clown. Mr. Pattelle said he watched JP's show when he was a kid. When we came back to the classroom, we made our own bronze statue using wax with Mr. Pattelle. We had to make our statues quickly before the wax was too cold to mold. Mrs. Pattison asked us to include movement in our scuplture, make sure it was balanced and include texture. They turned out VERY COOL!!!

Today was the first day that we used the Mimio. The mimio allows us to control the computer using the "Mimio Pen" on the white board. Right now we are practicing using the pen and throughout the year we will use the mimio for different subjects like math, reading, science and writing. We are also workin on building our stamina in reading. We read on our own during Read to Self for 15 minutes today. Ms. Guerrero says she is really excited that everyone found a book they can't wait to read. During problem solving in math, we shared our thinking and learned to applaud our classmates with snapping. Everyone who shared had very good strategies for problem solving.S7302011.JPG

Today we went to P.E and played nock the pin down. It was fun we had to throw a Frisbee and nock a pin down. In library they had a incubator with different type of eggs. And drum roll please...we won the penny war!!!!

Today we did a science lesson and it was about the animals we will see up on saddle rock. We went outside and had kids line up. We put clothes pins and animals names on the back of the student in front of us. We went around asking questions about or animal or plant on our back. They had to be yes or no questions so we could guess our plant or animal. At p.e we went out to do track and ran a 200 yard and 75 yard run. AJ threw up we played spider ball. For our penny war we collected $54.89 for today so we are in the lead for all of the classes of 5th grade.

Today was the first day we totalled up our pennies and other coins for the penny war. We are having the penny war to save money to go to the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. Everyone in fifth grade is participating in the Penny War. The pennies count as positive points and the other coins and dollar bills count as negative points. We can "ding" other classrooms points with the other coins and dollar bills that we bring in. So far, we are in the lead. Jose brought in a whole pile of pennies and that helped our positive points a lot.

Hello 5th grade friends! I want to tell you all how very proud I am of you all for your HARD work during this last WASL week! I know how hard it was taking these tests for the past two weeks but you all did an amazing job. It was because of all of the hard work we 5th grade teachers saw that we decided to throw you a Congratulations for surviving WASL ice cream sunday party!!! You all made it through these two weeks of WASL testing and now you get to celebrate with ice cream and a lot of toppings! Here are some pictures for you to enjoy from our Ice Cream Sunday party! Can you believe that all of those 5th graders were in our room! WOW!

Mrs. Larson put some of our Dream Rooms in the display case this weekend. It is so cool because everyone who passes by the office gets to see all of our hard work! She also put our names on our rooms so everyone knows who made them. They all came out very cool!

For math today we recorded the different colors of shirts everyone wore. We got into different groups depending on what color our shirt was. There were six different groups; one for green shirts, one for black, one for gray, one for white, one for blue and one for other colors. We made a bar graph with our groups outside and a circle graph too! After that, we went inside and put our data onto paper and made paper bar and circle graphs. After we worked on math, we made our posters for social studies. We worked with a partner to make a poster for one of the ammendmets. Most of us chose either the right to vote or the right to be treated equally. All of the posters are coming out GREAT!

We have been working on writing conclusions for Science. For this science experiement, our question was, "Will the wax of the crayon affect the dyed color of the boiled egg?" First we gathered all of our materials on our desks so we could work with our partners. Then, each one of us colored something on the egg with a crayon. After we wrote on the egg, we placed the egg in the dye for about 5 minutes. We observed first, and then recorded our information. After about five minutes we took our egg out. We found that the crayon did not affect the overall color of the egg. The crayon did not get colored at all. It looked the same as when we first started.

Fifth grade friends, many of you have asked me to add some pictures that I took in Boston when I was there. Here are some of them. Like I mentioned before, Boston was AMAZING! It was so cool that I had connections to the places I was visiting. I am glad we discussed many of the events during the Revolutionary War because I knew a lot about everything that I saw and experienced. Here are some pictures I know you will enjoy!

WOW!!! Paul Revere's tombstone!

In math today, we used egg cartons and string to practice fractions. The egg cartons are a good idea and an easy way to practice our fractions, however, some people prefer geoboards. We also practiced reducing fractions in our bridges books. During science, Ms. Guerrero realized that we used the one variable for the wrong investigation. So today we used the "standard water source" instead of the "flood water source". We concluded that the standard water source caused less erosion and it created a canyon. However, the flood water source caused more erosion. Overall, science was fun today.

Hi 5th Graders!!! I am sitting in the airport waiting to board my plane for New York!!! I thought I would take picture of the plane that I am going to be getting on! Here it is! I'll keep you all posted. Check back here or on our Moodle site!

Ms. Guerrero

This is what it looks like when we board the plane. We walk down a long tunnel-like walk way that leads us to the door of the plane. That is where we enter the plane! Can you see the tunnel in the picture above? It is long and white!

It was an all day Social Studies day! First, Mr. Sheppard came to visit us when we created our timeline of events that occured that led to the Declaration of Independence. As soon as Mr. Sheppard walked in, we all sang happy birthday and really surprised him! Whe he was in here, we were creating our timelines in groups. They came out very detailed and full of good information. After lunch, we went into the computer lab where Mr. Ron Brown taught us how to make postcards using powerpoint. We used our information from the American Revolution to put on our postcards. In the pictures you can see a group working on their timeline and A.J. and Alondra helping us by finding the exact date of some of the events.

Today in Social Studies the whole class used their colonist names and Ms.Guerrero's was King George The Third. One of the three issues we talked about today was that King George The Third made the colonist pay the Sugar taxes. He made them pay because the French and Indian war had cost the British 140 million pounds. This is a diary entry from one of the colonists named Samuel.

February 1765

Today I was very mad that the king sent us a note saying that we would have to pay taxes. We want to get all of our people that do not want to pay these taxes and fight for NO TAXES!

We also partner read during Daily 5 today at the end of the day. The pictures show students taking turns while partner reading.

Today we as a class studied life and jobs in the 1700 hundreads. We choose names that were common among the colonist for ourselves. Also we have diaries that we write in about how life was in the 1700 hundreads. We will write in them everyday like we were a real colonist in the 13 colonies.

Most of the other 5th grade classrooms got to see all of our hard work in science with the models we built. Today we set out our models for Mrs. Scott and Mrs. Heinz's classes to walk through and see them all. We had a chance to do the same when we visited Mrs. Scott's room as a group, then we walked to Mrs. Heinz's room to check out their models. Some of their models were insane! We saw some pools, some 2 story houses, and even some off-roading areas. We were still very proud of our models because they were all made from scratch! Everything we put in our models was handmade. We did a great job!

For science today we made models of the Grand Canyon. Each group made a model using sand, water, a plastic container and some other materials. We poured water from a small container that had a small hole. The water represented all of the rain that fell onto the grand canyon. The path that the water created represented the erosion that all of the rain caused. Some of our models actually looked like the Grand Canyon.
